Real Madrid and Croatian midfielder Luka Modric was awarded the FIFA Best award after an incredible 2017/18 season. Here’s a look at what got him the incredible accolade.
On Monday evening, FIFA had their annual FIFA Best Awards in London, England, and from the name alone you can guess the purpose of the highlight event. Every year the Football Federation awards the very best in the game in an array of positions within a club.
Despite narrowly missing out on the World Cup this year against France, Modric was deservedly given time in the spotlight once again. This year Luka Modric was nominated for the high profile award alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohammed Salah. His peers each had amazing seasons in their own respect, breaking plenty of records but it was Modric’s influence for both club and country that pushed him over the top.
Modric was very selfless in his thank you speech, showing his appreciation for his teammates both Real Madrid and Croatia. Last season Modric completed a three-peat in the Champions League and reaching the Finals of the World Cup. Having been dubbed one of the worst La Liga singing at the time of his transfer from Tottenham he’s surely made those who doubted him swallow his words.
“This trophy is not just mine, it’s for all my Real Madrid teammates, for all my teammates from the Croatian national team, for all coaches that I have played for,” he said at the Best FIFA Football Awards held in London, “because without them this would not be possible.”
Luka has now made it three major awards in a row and will be looking to make it four come January for the Ballon d’Or. He has now won these three illustrious awards in just a four-month span. Over the last 10 years, the winners of the award have been dominated by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
In July, the midfield maestro won the FIFA Golden Ball Award, which is given to the best player of the tournament. Then in August, Luka was awarded the UEFA Champions League Player of the Year award.
At the 2014 FIFA, Best Award Modric was nominated to the world team but has been on another level since. Over the last four years, he has been a part of the FIFA World Best XI, a title that he is evidently worthy of. Under a new system, Luka will be working hard to help lead his team to another successful season.
