Real Madrid left-back Marcelo picked up a calf injury late in the loss to Sevilla on Wednesday, leaving him in doubt for the Madrid Derby this weekend. Here is the update.

Based on all the indications from the team medical staff and the way Marcelo reacted, Los Blancos could be without the Brazilian for at least the next two games. Marcelo pulled up in the 72nd minute with a non-contact injury.

He grabbed at his leg as he was on the ball and called for a stop in play. Although he tried to play through the niggle, he was unable to finish the match as Madrid fell 3-0.

“I picked up a knock, but the defeats hurts more,” the fullback said as he tried to brush off questions of the problem.

Manager Julen Lopetegui was more open with the Brazilian’s status following the tough match. “Marcelo seems to have a [muscle tear] but we’ll have to wait for tests tomorrow.”

The defender underwent an MRI today to determine the severity of the muscle injury, but no information has been made available. One thing is for sure though, Lopetegui will be without Marcelo for at least the Madrid Derby and possibly against CSKA Moscow on Tuesday in the Champions League.

With Dani Carvajal and Isco already in doubt for the weekend tilt, it appears the Spanish boss will have a tough time finding a quality first-team to face Atletico. The good news is Real Madrid does have the necessary depth to plug the holes of the injured players.

Nacho can be deployed to the left side while Álvaro Odriozola takes over on the right for Carvajal. In the midfield, either Dani Ceballos or Lucas Vazquez can again fill in for the ‘bandy-legged bandit’.

This Real Madrid team can still win the match against Atleti without these three players, but it won’t be easy. Having the Santiago Bernabéu crowd behind them should provide a much-needed boost.

We will continue to keep a close eye on any updates on these players status as we move closer to kickoff.
