The season is quickly going from bad to worse and the latest setback to Deportivo Alavés also marks the longest scoring drought Real Madrid has gone through in three decades. The Twitterati certainly had a field day cocking a snook at Los Blancos.
From champs to chums in a matter of few months, football’s a funny game. And Real Madrid are a funny team too. They raise hopes with a strong start and make you believe that Cristiano Ronaldo won’t be forgotten after all.
But, by the blink of an eye, it all goes down the drain and the team struggles to even find the net against a side that finished 14th in the league a year ago.
It was absolute catastrophe from stem to stern; from start to finish. The Whites went through the motions at the Mendizorroza, exhibiting more melancholia in their gameplay than the film The Fault in Our Stars.
To add insult to injury, Alavés broke the deadlock in the fifth minute of injury time when Manuel Garcia Sanchez rose above the defense to head home and stab yet another knife in the collective Madridista heart.
The loss has also opened up opportunities for Atletico Madrid and Sevilla to race past, while Barcelona can pull three points clear with a win over Valencia tomorrow.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to the loss:

The worst thing about Real Madrid tonight wasn't that they didn't score, but that they never even looked like scoring. Completely toothless.

Lopetegui on the firing line?
Lopetegui going to get a vote of confidence, aka the kiss of death, after this.
