Real Madrid now knows their opponents for the first round of the 2018-19 Copa del Rey. Here’s a look at who it is and when it all goes down.

Real Madrid’s third campaign of the season gets underway with the start of the Copa del Rey. The competition invites clubs from various levels of Spanish football to participate in the contest, provided they meet a few requirements of course.

Los Blancos will face off against UD Melilla at the Alvarez Claro Stadium. The stadium holds just 10, 000 people and is located on the continent of Africa right beside Morrocco. Yes, you read that right.

Melilla is a Spanish Enclave on the northeast portion of Morrocco roughly 4.7 miles long and a population of just 86, 000 people. The flight isn’t too long but the travel will, of course, be a bit of a pain for Real.

The match will be the last fixture for the month of October as they play on the 31st. The second leg will be played on December 5 at the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid will be looking to turn their fortunes in the CDR around. The last time they hoisted the trophy was in the 2013-14 season. Madrid has only won the Copa twice in the last decade. Not a stat that a club like Real Madrid would like to have associated with their name.

Melilla is currently in Segunda Division B and has made their way to the Final round after plenty of hard work. Melilla is a small club but we don’t have to look too far back to know how cockiness can fire back at us. Despite their small size, their big heart makes up for a lot, Melilla is currently top of the table in their division.

Last year Madrid were sent packing after a disturbing two-legged loss to Leganes. After a poor run in the competition and a season that isn’t going to plan this competition can help lift the spirits of the club and fans.
