Today, in a rather surprising report, Real Madrid was named as one of 16 European teams who will submit a proposal to FIFA and UEFA to start a ‘European Super League’ in 2021. Here are the details.

With speculation and shock spreading across the footballing world, some of the biggest clubs in the world are wishing to separate from playing in their respective leagues based on the country where they are located.

From England, to France, to Italy, some big name teams want to step up the level of competition and compete in a Super League.

For me, even if this is all rumors, the thought of having the 16 best teams in Europe all competing under the same competition year round is a thrilling idea. For the last three years in the FIFA video games, I have made a Super League with some of the same names from this report, and my goodness is it fun.

According to reports from the rather popular gossip site, Football Leaks, fans have been tipped that the likes of Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, PSG, and Manchester City are interested in starting their own league in the next few years.

You can see from the tweet all of the teams that would be included in the new league and I’m sure like me, you are thinking to yourself, “Hey, this actually sounds like a really good idea!”

It really is a great idea, however, there are plenty of roadblocks that could derail this big plan. For instance, every club mentioned above has to request a release from their respective leagues.

Do you think La Liga is going to let their three most valuable clubs leave? I certainly don’t.

Then there is the commitment to play in UEFA events like the Super Cup, the Champions League, and Europa League. This new Super League would ultimately wipe out the need for a Champions League since all the best teams would be competing on a week-by-week basis.

There is almost no information to go off of right now other than the list that was leaked earlier today. Plus, with the plans to start the league in the 2021/2022 season, there is still plenty of time to figure things out.

I would absolutely love if Real Madrid was playing teams like Juventus, Manchester City, and Liverpool twice a year home and away. It would be such compelling football.

Yet, there are a lot of obstacles that stand in the way of this happening. Keep your fingers crossed we get more news very, very soon.
