Question 3

This is quite a subjective matter – I’m sure different people will have differing answers. In my humble opinion, it is extremely clear that defensive depth is a problem.

The international break fell at quite a lucky time for Madridista’s as the injury woes at the back were, to say the least, utterly horrendous, to sum it up, Marcelo and Carvajal were both injured at the same time for considerable periods. However, we were lucky in the sense that Reguilón and Odriozola have both performed in stellar fashion in their absences.

However, Reguilón is now also injured following a hard battle against Celta Vigo. This could’ve been quite the issue if it weren’t for the international break with Nacho also out for 6+ weeks.

Could be worse? You bet! Varane was also out during this period which saw us draft in another capable youngster in Javi Sanchez. Whilst all the replacements have been effective, options in this position are clearly needed.

I’ve always held the sentiment that the club never truly replaced Pepe. Whilst Jesus Vallejo is a good talent, his injury record and shaky fitness means he simply is not reliable. The club has been linked with Mario Hermoso consistently, a solid option. Once Nacho recovers, that would leave more rotational options for Solari. To conclude, defensive options are the most needed thing from the upcoming transfer window.
