Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casilla made quite the statement when asked about plans for his career. His shocking answering has some quite curious as to how plausible it all may be.

Undoubtedly a legend of Real Madrid, Iker Casillas has said that he would not shy away from returning to his home club.  37-year-old Casillas is regarded as one of the best of his generation when it comes to being a netminder. His clout comes from a glamorous 16 years with Los Blancos, a long time for any player at such a club.

The former White made his debut with the first team as a teenager, a huge feat given the situation he was thrown into. Iker made 725 appearances for Real, securing five La Liga titles as well as three Champions Leagues. As things got tricky in Madrid he elected to go out on a high heading to Porto in 2015.

In the interview, he admitted himself that this was the best move for him at the time. It was a leave as the hero or stay long enough to become the villain sort of situation. Casillas said that it was  “a step in the right direction. If I had continued at Real Madrid, I would have had a worse ending that I did.”

Iker also struggled to gain minutes despite his super capabilities, and this came from former manager Jose Mourniho. The Portuguese manager opted to start Diego Lopez in lieu of Casillas rendering him to the bench.

Next. The complexities of James Rodriguez's potential return. dark

Earlier this month the former Capitan sat down with Movistar+ for an interview where he discussed an array of topics. When asked about the possibility of returning to either Real Madrid or the Spanish National Team he responded: “I would be delighted.”

Casillas said that he “can’t forget where I grew up.” as a reason as to why he would be glad if he could come back.  With Keylor Navas coming out and saying he would like a contract extension it’s hard to say how the goalie situation will play out. Especially with the arrival of Thibaut Courtois, Madrid surely has their first choice spot filled for the next five years, at least.

While plenty of speculation surrounds the goalie situation at Real Madrid, one thing is for sure, Iker Casillas’ undying love for his first club. “I am a Madridista, and I always want Madrid to win. It will be like that all my life.”
