Nine Real Madrid players make the UEFA Team of the Year shortlist

Nearly 20 percent of the candidates for the 2018 UEFA Team of the Year award hail from Real Madrid. Nine of Madrid players could make the team of the best players in all of Europe. Here are the details.

After securing its third consecutive Champions League title during the 2017/2018 campaign, UEFA has taken note of the incredible talent amongst the Real Madrid team and have named nine of its players to the 50-player shortlist for the Team of the Year.

The nine Los Blancos players are Keylor Navas, Raphael Varane, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Luka Modric, Casemiro, Toni Kroos, Isco, and Gareth Bale.

Just a year ago, Real Madrid players made up nearly half of the team with Cristiano Ronaldo, Modric, Kroos, Marcelo, and Ramos all making the team. This year, expect to see many of those same names make the list.

This honor is newer to the footballing world and was introduce in 2001. Since, it has become one of the fan favorite award ceremonies because the vote is entirely fan voting. Plus, football fans can use the UEFA Team of the Year exclusive player cards in the video game, FIFA 19.

Real Madrid will be looking to keep its streak of players on the list going as at least one Los Blancos player has made the Team of the Year since its inception.

Interesting facts and figures

  • Toni Kroos is looking for his fourth UEFA Team of the Year, all of which have come since he joined Real Madrid.
  • Luka Modric and Kroos have featured in the midfield the last two years.
  • Sergio Ramos currently sits third amongst all players with seven Team of the Year appearances. He is only behind Ronaldo (12) and Lionel Messi (nine).
    • Ramos was first named to the UEFA Team of the Year in 2008.
  • Since 2011, Real Madrid has had at least three players make the team.
  • Real Madrid – as a club – ranks second in Europe behind rival FC Barcelona with 44 player appearances (Barca is just one ahead with 45).
  • Keylor Navas and Isco are the only two Real Madrid candidates this year to not have made the team before.

Voting for the competition opened today and will run until Monday, January 11th when the team will be announced.
