Raphael Varane reaches 250 caps with Real Madrid
Real Madrid center-back Raphael Varane has reached yet another milestone in his career. Here’s a look at his time at Madrid.
Raphael Varane started off as one of the most coveted young defenders in the world and since arriving at Real Madrid he’s lived up to the hype. Coming to the capital at such a young age, expectations were high, and considering the climate he arrived in, it was no easy task. Now after seven seasons he has played 250 games with Los Blancos.
Varane was just 18 years-old when made his way over to Madrid from Lens, in Ligue 1. Florentino Perez finalized the deal to bring over the defender for a measly £9m, today he is valued at £72m. Those numbers alone are a testament to how Varane has been sculpted from a youngster to an elite defender.

Working his way into the team was no easy task, Sergio Ramos and Pepe had a strong defensive pairing, one that was hard to crack. Their reliability along with the understanding they had fostered was hard to disrupt and take a chance on.
The Frenchman though worked hard and made his way into the starting XI. But that, of course, took time, first, he became a reliable second option if Pepe or Ramos were absent. After solid performances and garnering more confidence from his managers, he was able to wiggle his way through with Pepe taking his place on the bench.

The tall center-back possess more than the typical grit and grind. Over the years he has become incredibly poised with the ball and refined the ability to spread the ball around the pitch with accuracy. Add on his capability of getting his head on the end of set pieces, he is without a doubt one of the best defenders in the world. It’s no wonder that he was instrumental in helping France win the World Cup earlier this year.
