Would Jose Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid be that bad?

Self-proclaimed as “The Special One”, Jose Mourinho was once able to say that about himself and have all the statistics in the world to back it up. Could the manager return to Real Madrid?

When everyone else joins in and calls you The Special One as well, you know you’re doing something right. The problem with this world though is quite simple: “You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”

Right now, Jose Mourinho is the villain.

After being sacked by Manchester United a lot later than many would have probably liked, the rumors began to circulate about where he would go next. While many said that he should just retire, others have suggested that he will no longer be able to get a job with top teams anymore.

Of course, the rumors don’t end there as various reports have claimed that the Portuguese manager may, in fact, return to Real Madrid as Florentino Perez is a known admirer of his.

Now, let’s think about that possibility for a minute. Jose Mourinho arrived at Real Madrid after winning the UEFA Champions League with Inter Milan and having a CV that many managers can only dream of.

Having the Santiago Bernabeu as his next destination seemed like the logical next step at the time, which it was. He arrived at the club and it was incredible to watch how he handled the pressure and had his team playing weekly. Unfortunately, that only lasted a season. Afterward, it was pure chaos.

Somehow, he found a way to strain any sort of relationship between Real Madrid and Barcelona as the games turned into heated battles and many violent moments that really have no place in the football world.

As if that wasn’t enough, he was part of completely losing the dressing room and making public any problems he had with specific players namely Pedro Leon, Pepe, and Iker Casillas. It’s worth noting that his problems with Casillas still continue until this day.

He even made sure that there was some bad beef between himself and Cristiano Ronaldo, but he couldn’t take that one too far as CR was always going to be the winner in the end.

Jose Mourinho finally departed but left destruction in the background. Well, I believe that’s what the consensus is and to a certain extent, it’s true. The club wasn’t respected as much anymore as people looked at Real Madrid as a ‘dirty’ club and explained it as a toxic environment. Because of that, we have let any accomplishments by Mourinho leave our minds.

Before his arrival, Los Blancos were struggling and couldn’t make it past the Round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League as they struggled in La Liga as well against Barcelona. Mourinho changed that as he reached the semifinals of the European competition and was able to win the league and Copa del Rey during his three years there.

With the accomplishments Jose Mourinho had at Real Madrid, it’s difficult to deny that the news regarding a toxic environment at the club didn’t hurt. For all the improvements he gave the club, he also took a lot away.

The club needed a rebuild after his departure and I’m not even talking about the players but rather the mentality. The new manager had to find a way to bring harmony back to a club that all but lost it. Is losing the harmony and integrity of the club really worth trophies?

This is where I answer my question on whether or not a Jose Mourinho return would be a bad thing for the club. Unlike many other Madridistas that I follow, I am actually a Mourinho fan and I am genuinely sad to see the turn his career has taken but I will never ever think that he is necessarily a bad manager and I will forever be grateful for what he has given the club. Having said that, this is not a time for him to return in my opinion.

During his last tenure at the club, his appointment as the manager made sense but Los Blancos are not in the state they were in at that time.

They need a manager to make some much-needed changes but not one who will come in with the “I am the boss and what I say goes” attitude as it will simply do more harm than good. Actually, it will only harm the club, I don’t see anything good coming out of that.

The Jose Mourinho that got sacked by Manchester United will be looking for a new club in order to prove something and that is not someone we have space for at Real Madrid. A manager should come in to prove he’s good enough to manage the team and lead them to greater heights while Mourinho will be coming in to prove to himself that he is still “The Special One”.

With all my love and admiration to the Portuguese manager, he is no longer the special one. I don’t mean that as a diss but rather as a simple fact.

“You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”
