Real Madrid has been keeping a very close eye on attacking midfielder Nabil Fekir in the last couple years or so after the French player burst onto the scene with Olympique Lyonnais. Could the club bring him in this summer?

It’s no mystery that Luka Modric is getting towards the back end of his illustrious career. When I say this, I don’t mean that the little Croatian midfielder at 33-years-old is about to retire in the next year or two, but it is safe to assume that he is nearing the end his playing time.

One player who has been labeled as a suitable replacement for Modric is French international Nabil Fekir. The crafty midfielder plays a very similar role to Modric with Lyon and could be the next star in the midfield for Real Madrid according to reports.

It’s hard to deny that Fekir would be a great player to bring in with the playmaking ability he has and the goalscoring threat as well. In the 2014-2015 and 2016-2017 season, Fekir amassed double-digit goals (13 and 18 goals respectively) and has been an assist machine since arriving to Lyon.

Since 2013, Fekir has totaled 32 assists and has been a huge contributor to his current club’s success.

Fekir has been on president Florentino Perez’s radar for some time now and after impressing all of last season and during the World Cup this summer, there is little doubt the wily president will let Fekir go to FC Barcelona or another one of the big European clubs.

Bringing Fekir to Madrid would be a great move for both the player in the club. Based off of what I have seen from the midfielder, he looks ready to fit the role of Modric when the Real Madrid number 10 is ready to move on.

Fekir has experience with Real Madrid backup striker Mariano Diaz and helped Diaz to a stunning 20 goal season in the Europea League and Ligue 1.

Diaz hasn’t received the playing time he deserves since Santiago Solari took over as manager, but there is still a chance for him to make an impact if he has the right players around him. Fekir is that guy.

Next. Mateo Kovacic considering permanent future away from Real Madrid. dark

If Fekir can’t be signed, of course, James Rodriguez would be the next best option in the midfield. The Colombian has said multiple times that he feels he is underappreciated at Bayern Munich and is ready to return to Spain.

However, as is always the case in the European football world, there are conflicting reports.
