Real Madrid fans should be appalled that former striker Alvaro Morata has decided to join crosstown rivals Atletico Madrid on loan for the next 18-months. Here’s why.
Since he made his first-team debut with Los Blancos in 2013, I have been a fan of Spanish striker Alvaro Morata. The clinical way he was able to finish in the box and come through in the clutch blew me away.
After the news just a few days ago that the player, who has been with Chelsea for just 18 months now, will be leaving England and returning to Madrid had me befuddled.
No, he is not returning to Real Madrid. It’s the opposite actually.
Morata has decided to burn all the remaining bridges he has with Los Blancos in order to join Los Rojiblancos on loan for the next year and a half. After struggling to find goals for Chelsea – he has just five goals and no assists this season in league play – he will now be just a few miles away from the Santiago Bernabéu and his former club.
But, that doesn’t seem to affect Morata who said in an interview after joining the club, “I’ve watched the last matches of the team. I have lived it like I was here and it feels like I have been a part of this team for ages.”
Later in the interview, the striker goes on to say that he had been in contact with several of the Atleti players and had been talking with French striker Antoine Griezmann for some time. He also mentioned that he had spoken with manager Diego Simeone, Diego Costa, and Vitolo before the move was made official.

Alvaro Morata has had one of the craziest careers the football world has ever seen. He has played in Spain, England, and Italy, he’s won 11 major titles, has scored over 100 goals, and is only 26. However, as Sid Lowe of ESPN mentions, there seems to be something missing with this guy.
16 goals in 47 appearances at Chelsea is simply not up to the standards of the Blues who are clearly fed up with Morata’s lack of production.
I still had sympathy for the player because of all the pressure he was under while in London, and it didn’t help that the manager change completely changed the way Morata was to be used.
As of today, I resent him. I understand he began his career at Atleti and is not the first player to play for both Madrid clubs, but this is not what he said when he left Real almost two years ago. Alvaro said he needed to be a regular starter at a big club.
That didn’t seem to work at Chelsea – it didn’t work very well at Juventus either – and now Morata is back in his home country.
I wish him a successful career, but I can’t say I’ll be rooting for him after this decision. See you on February 9th Señor Morata.
