Who should succeed Modric?

I don’t think it’s necessary for Real Madrid to prioritize a midfielder for this summer. Real Madrid’s midfield is packed, in fact, there are more options than needed. Now I’m not saying we need to offload players, I’m all for depth.

That being said, depth must be coupled with a healthy rotation. If you look at a player like Isco, someone who could play in either the middle or final third, he is struggling for minutes. With Isco struggling it’s likely that a newcomer would as well unless it is someone of immense talent.

It all comes down to the fact that Madrid has options and plenty of them. Working with what they have right now is something that I and many other would welcome. Dani Ceballos has come into his own this seasons with Solari putting his faith and trust in the youngster.

Isco, of course, is still an option but probably not to the depths of Luka Modric given that he doesn’t possess the same capability as the Croatian.

In my eyes, Mateo Kovacic would have been a wonderful successor to Luka Modric. Of the midfielders currently at Real Madrid Kovacic emulates Luka’s playing style the most. Unfortunately, he requested a move-out and is on loan with Chelsea until the end of June this year.

The key question is what he decides to do and what his parent and loan club wish as well. Kovacic left last year in search of minutes, but Chelsea is now in a serious rebuilding phase. Whether he has the patience to stick around can sway his movement or lack thereof.

Real Madrid should prioritize purchasing a marquee striker or even a winger with the pass. Madrid has plenty of options to help create and while Benzema has been clinical in recent weeks a consistent striker is needed.
