Conclusion

This match was a viewing of two Real Madrid’s one that sat back and one that took control of the match. Why Real Madrid sat back and soaked up the pressure was unclear, but that is most certainly not the way to win matches.

In recent weeks the Whites have faced off against stiff competition in Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. Against both teams, Real Madrid came out strong, press quickly and moving the ball with accuracy.

Both goals scored today proved that was the recipe for success. Goals by Benzema and Asensio were a result of move the ball swiftly and great vision. Similar traits to the goals scored against Atletico.

A strong start is key and Madrid must continue to repeat the good things that have come from their success this season.

The return leg of the fixture will take place on March 5 as Madrid will host Ajax at the Bernabeu. Ajax will push to make their first appearance in the quarterfinals in 16 years while Madrid has progressed for nearly a decade.
