Let’s go back by one year as Real Madrid was preparing to play in their third consecutive UEFA Champions League match. Now imagine someone came up to you and said that next season, Los Blancos wouldn’t be in the UEFA Champions League final. Oh yes, the times have changed.

Honestly, you might be okay with missing the final since it was already a surprise that your favorite team has made history. Then, that same person tells you that manager Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo are leaving in a couple months and Florentino Perez won’t purchase sufficient replacements.

Now, you’re getting anxious and right before you’re able to reply, he tells you that Real Madrid decided to place their trust in Gareth Bale, Marco Asensio, Karim Benzema, and Isco to provide the goals, truly believing that they’ll be okay.

Only Benzema steps up while every other player in the squad that wins the UEFA Champions League has been shockingly poor, but, Zidane comes back and decides to trust them for another season.

This is where we find ourselves now.

Real Madrid’s best performing players this season were not part of the squad last year – other than Benzema and Llorente – and that in itself is extremely worrying. Those players this year have undoubtedly been Karim Benzema, Marcos Llorente, Alvaro Odriozola, Sergio Reguilon, Vinicius Junior, and Brahim Diaz.

Other players such as Lucas Vazquez and Toni Kroos have had some good games and others that have been terrible while the same goes for the defense as a whole other than Marcelo who has been all kinds of horrible whenever he got onto the pitch.

Zidane’s return to the club means that he will want to trust the players who have helped him make history, but the problem with that is we as fans will somehow trust players like Marcelo to continue helping the team and it will definitely backfire.

Even after the return of the French manager, Marcelo had one good game and another average one, other than that, he has been a massive liability to the team but Zidane has continued to trust him. Luka Modric is another player that somehow was able to win the Balon d’Or, but his form since then has dipped immensely and he is now also a liability to this team.

What is the point of players like as Dani Ceballos, Llorente, Vinicius, or Brahim doing really well and then get asked to find another club simply because Zidane is hoping that the older under-performing players will come up good after a two month break?

This is really worrying for the team and the future of this Real Madrid side. All players and teams have to move forward and right now, there is a list of players who have proven throughout this season that they are not good enough to continue at the club moving forward.

This list includes players such as Marcelo, Isco, Asensio, Gareth Bale, Mariano Diaz, and even Thibaut Courtois to a certain extent, however, I doubt he will be sold a season after arriving to the Spanish capital.

Unfortunately, most of the players mentioned will end up staying at the club while Los Merengues will probably let go of Marcos Llorente, Brahim Diaz, Dani Ceballos, and Sergio Reguilon. All of these players have proven themselves to be good enough to be in this team while Llorente and Reguilon have even proven that they have the abilities to start for the club.

Unfortunately, Zizou has made up his mind on the upcoming season and it could be the beginning of very dark days ahead.

As a fan of Zinedine Zidane and someone who celebrated his return as though we won a fourth consecutive Champions League title, I worry about the future of his reputation and more importantly the future of this club.

As time went on, we have realized just how bad this Real Madrid side has become and how desperately things need to change. Unfortunately, a few adjustments won’t make a difference as this team is crying out for a rebuild even though the decision makers aren’t listening.

Next. Eden Hazard to Real Madrid a done deal. dark

Of course, it’s very premature to judge anything even before the window opens, but these assumptions are based on observations and even though they might be wrong, they may also turn out to be correct.

Either way, we move forward and hope that this season was just the start of something magnificent once again. We should move forward carefully as disappointment can come just as fast as happiness and football has a weird way of shutting down any and every expectation you have.
