Real Madrid loanee James Rodriguez is expected to return to the Capital after two years with Bayern Munich. Here’s a look at the implications this could have.

Colombian midfielder James Rodriguez will be returning to Real Madrid after a two season-long loan with Bayern Munich. Munich will have until June 15 to activate Rodriguez’s purchase clause which was built into the contract for a fee of 42 million Euros.

In an official statement club CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge thanked James for his time and all the best for his future.

"On behalf of FC Bayern München, I’d like to thank James for two successful years at the club. We’ve won the German league title and the DFB Cup twice with him. Beyond that, we reached the semi-finals of the Champions League with him. James made an important contribution to all these successes. – Rummenigge on James"

Rodriguez registered 15 goals and 20 assists in 67 games with Munich. While his first season was phenomenal and appreciated by the fans the latter didn’t go so well. Rodriguez had an easier time under Carlo Ancelotti who is also spent time with at Real Madrid, but tensions were flying high with Niko Kovac.

Bayern Munich expressed their appreciation with a video posted to their appreciation for the Colombians time with the club. The video recounted his arrival to the club, highlights, and a thank you at the end.

With the return of James to the Bernabeu, questions will now loom as to what the club is going to do with the talented player. In his three seasons with Real Madrid James earned runs of starts but often fought Isco for minutes.

In addition to battling with other players in the midfield for minutes, Madrid is in the midst of revamping their roster. There are no shortage of options in the middle and final third of the park, but Zidane and the board will need to send players out if they wish to continue attracting top talent.

Rodriguez’s value currently stands at 65 million euros, a sizeable amount for Madrid to recoup making selling him a viable option. Once again James’ future with Real Madrid hangs in limbo with fans waiting to see whether he will dawn the new white and gold kits come the 2019-2020 campaign.
