Real Madrid: The signing of Luka Jovic signals the end of Borja Mayoral’s time with the club
By Ben Sundock
It looks like Borja Mayoral’s time with Real Madrid is coming to an end after the club signed striker Luka Jovic on Wednesday. With a couple of Spanish teams ready pushing for his signature, Los Blancos should not hesitate in selling him.
Even though he is a product of La Fabrica – the Real Madrid youth academy – football can at times be a cut-throat business. After spending the previous season on loan at Levante, 22-year-old Borja Mayoral will likely be sold by the club during the summer window.
Two disappointing loan stints and a full season on the Real Madrid first team has proven that the player listed as a striker can not be trusted to score on a regular basis or become a regular starter.
This news shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to Madrid fans who have seen the striker fail to convert with any regularity whatsoever. Look no further than his most recent loan stint in La Liga. Despite making 29 appearances in league play and two in the Copa del Rey, Mayoral managed just five goals.
Now, compare that to the club’s newest striker – Luka Jovic – and it is abundantly clear that Borja has no business competing with he nor Mariano Diaz.
While he may not have a seat on the Real Madrid bench under Zinedine Zidane in the coming seasons, there are some clubs who have inquired about his signature.
The most likely destination for the player is Real Sociedad who have been in talks with Real Madrid since mid-May, according to Marca. Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay and Florentino Perez have become good friends over the years and have had a good relationship in the transfer market.
Remember, Los Blancos sold Marcos Llorente’s brother, Diego, to La Real while Aperribay sent fullback Álvaro Odriozola to the Spanish capital last summer. According to the reports, Real Sociedad want to complete the deal ahead of Mayoral’s Spanish U21 call up in early July.
I think all of us dedicated fans can agree that this is not only a good business move for Real Madrid after spending so much money already on transfers this summer, but a good career move for the player as well.
He is still young and could feature more prominently with the Basque club who only has one out and out striker at the moment in William Jose. The transfer will likely include a buyback clause allowing Perez to recall Mayoral if he does indeed begin to show flashes of stardom.
