50,000 fans welcome Eden Hazard to Real Madrid
By Ben Sundock
A very chipper Eden Hazard said hello to the Real Madrid faithful gathered at the Santiago Bernabéu on Thursday night. Considered the biggest signing by the club since Cristiano Ronaldo 10 years ago, some 50,000 fans flooded the stadium to see the Belgian wizard put on the white and gold kit for the first time.
“It’s been a dream come true. Arriving at the Bernabéu, seeing all the fans, talking to them,” Hazard told the masses of press members gathered at his press conference. With a beaming smiling and accompanied by his parents and his three brothers, Eden Hazard made his first appearance in the stunning new Real Madrid kit.
Worth well over €100 million, fans are anxious to see the former Chelsea powerhouse make his first match debut for the club and the atmosphere in the Bernabéu on Thursday night rivaled that of a match at times.
In fact, the 50,000 in attendance is bigger than the attendance the club had for four of its La Liga matches during a tumultuous campaign.
The crowd waited with baited breath for Hazard to kiss the coveted badge and once he did, it was as if he had scored a game-winner against FC Barcelona to win the league.
Hazard was gracious in his introduction remarks as he spoke in French, but attempted to speak a little Spanish while on the pitch, which of course pleased the crowd.
The most frustrating thing about the introduction is that we will have to wait for two months to see Eden Hazard play his first official match. On the upside, the preseason tour of the United States is just a little over a month away.
That should give us a chance to see how the new players perform and how well they mesh with the players who are already in the club.
This was not the biggest reveal the club has put on, as Ronaldo holds the top spot with a stunning 75,000 fans in attendance. The reveal ranks sixth all time behind the likes of Maradona, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Neymar, and Kaka.
It was a truly a spectacle and it is clear that everyone who follows Real Madrid is ecstatic to have Eden Hazard join the ranks.
