Several reports came out yesterday indicating that Real Madrid has finally decided to have its own women’s team in the upcoming season after agreeing a fee to buy CD Tacon’s place in the division who were promoted this season.

This news is not yet official, but many are expecting the announcement to be made next week as Real Madrid becomes the third of the top three La Liga teams to take their spot in the competition.

Over the past couple years, Atletico Madrid has had their team in the league called Atletico Madrid Femenino and FC Barcelona has also taken part with their women’s team FC Barcelona Femini. Other teams such as Levante, Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad, and Sevilla all have their sides taking part in the competition already.

If you are not familiar with the Women’s Spanish League, known as La Liga Iberdrola, now would be a good time to catch up on what has been happening before Real Madrid make their debut in the competition. You don’t get an opportunity to watch the beginning of something that will definitely continue rising so it would be beneficial to take part in this.

Last season, Atletico Madrid Femenino was able to win the league with 84 points to make it three in a row as Barcelona Femini took second place with 78. Levante rounded out the top three with 57 points in the competition.

Barca didn’t end the year without success as they won the Copa de la Reina and made it to the final of the Champions League as they lost to Olympique Lyonnais.

There will be a lot more to come from this as this is just the early days of a competition that will surely continue growing. Real Madrid has taken a very long time to finalize its decision on having a women’s team, but it’s better late than never.

Many would have probably expected the team to start from scratch instead of buying out a team that has already taken their place in the top division, which was the initial plan, but this opportunity to purchase CD Tacon seemed to be a very good opportunity for them.

Now, we look forward to the official news next week before adding more matches to our calendar as we cheer on the first ever Real Madrid women’s team.
