Opinion: Real Madrid says adiós to Mateo Kovacic
Real Madrid has continued selling players in an effort to balance the squad and the books after already signing Rodrygo Goes, Eder Militao, Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic ,and Ferland Mendy. After the departure of Marcos Llorente to Atletico Madrid, the club has sold Mateo Kovacic to Chelsea.
The Croatian initially arrived to Real Madrid with high hopes of being the long-term successor to Luka Modric, but he got too impatient too soon as he decided to look elsewhere for time on the pitch.
Los Merengues granted him the move he needed last season by sending him out on loan to Chelsea and it looks as though the English Premier League is where Kovacic wants to be.
Personally, I’m a fan of Mateo Kovacic and felt like he would be someone with a bright future at Real Madrid, but unfortunately, that’s not how things worked out for the Croatian. It wasn’t that Los Blancos wanted to sell him as he could have actually shined at the club last season while everyone else was under performing, however, he wanted more playing time and that was something that could not be guaranteed by the manager (whether Julen Lopetegui last season or Zinedine Zidane this season).
It’s every players right to leave in search of more regular football and that is exactly what Kovacic did.
His loan spell at Chelsea may not have gone according to plan, but it seems as though he’s more comfortable there than he was in Spain. That could be because of the club or maybe the league in general.
This works out well for Real Madrid as they aim to recoup the massive amount of money spent so far this window and letting Kovacic go for a reported fee of €50 million is very good business no matter how you look at it.
Even though I would have liked to see Kovacic succeed at the club, it looks like this move is the best for all parties involved. He’ll be under the guidance of Frank Lampard at Chelsea and I’m assuming he already has the assurances he was looking for to make this move happen so I genuinely do wish him all the best.
At the end of the day, I’ll always continue to stand by the fact that if any player does not want to be a part of Real Madrid then he should be allowed to leave especially if a suitable offer comes through. That is exactly what has happened with Mateo Kovacic, which is why I don’t feel too bad about seeing him join another club.
There is still a very long time left during this summer and there will be a lot of ups and downs coming for the club, so be prepared for practically anything to happen as Real Madrid do everything they can to finalize its transfer activity as soon as possible.
