Real Madrid should seriously consider selling Lucas Vazquez if Arsenal come calling
By Ben Sundock
Lucas Vazquez has been a member of Real Madrid for over 12 years now and has become a fan favorite for the energy and consistency he brings to the squad. However, at 28 years old, it might be time for Los Blancos to sell the Spanish forward.
The list of teams chasing the signature of Real Madrid’s number 17 is rather impressive. Inter Milan, Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain are all reportedly interested in signing the right winger before the transfer window closes in August.
According to reports form Spain, Arsenal is the only true contender here having already submitted a bid to club president Florentino Perez and Los Blancos.
The Gunners are willing to pay in the neighborhood of €35 million which includes bonuses and add-ons.
If these rumors are true and the bid has indeed been placed, Real Madrid should take some time to think about what they want to do in the coming couple of seasons and how Lucas Vazquez fits in to manager Zinedine Zidane’s future plans.
As an outsider looking in, I think the club would be stupid to not accept a bid for this much. Having already sold three players – Marcos Llorente, Mateo Kovacic, and Raul de Tomas – selling Vazquez seems like a no-brainer.
With the arrivals of Eden Hazard and Brazilian prodigy Rodrygo Goes in addition to Marco Asensio and Vinícius Júnior already showing their value to Zizou, Vazquez’s role and the amount of playing time he will receive seems to be dwindling.
Even though I say this, it is nearly impossible to predict what Zidane has in store for his first-team this coming season. Plus, the relationship the French boss and Lucas Vazquez have seems to go well beyond what we see on the pitch.
Vazquez has made a name for himself under Zidane’s leadership and played a huge role during the 2017/2018 campaign with Gareth Bale sidelined with injuries several times.
It seems the Spanish winger is just now hitting his prime and his value will likely never be higher. So, I think Real Madrid should sell Vazquez this summer and make back even more money to help cancel out the huge sum they have spent on star players these last couple of months.
I look at Lucas Vazquez more as a fringe player than a star in this team and with even more forward talent joining, his role will only shrink. Let Unai Emery take him and use him in the Premier League.
After all, with aspirations to make the Spanish national team for the 2020 Euro tournament, Lucas would be better suited leaving Madrid to seek more regular playing time.
