Real Madrid played their first match of the International Champions Cup against Bayern Munich, here’s a look at the match from start to finish.

Real Madrid is finally back in action and my eyes were glued to my phone as I sat on the Metro, passed through airport security and eventually found myself a spot with an outlet. But, the outcome wasn’t what I hoped for, and the same could be said for the fans.

Madrid started out strong and quick out the gate. Looking to score early they pressed high and sent Karim KBenzema chasing down balls in the opening 10 minutes. Things were looking up at this point, with many optimistic about the first game after a long summer.

But, Bayern Munich who already has 90 more minutes under their belt looked the better side for most of the match. The Bavarians started a press of their own and moved the ball with greater efficiency.

In the 15th-minute Corentin Tolisso scored the opening goal of the match after the ball pinged around the box before the Frenchman smashed it home. Dani Carvajal bears most of the responsibility from conceding the goal, after sloppy defending from the right-back.

Madrid worked tirelessly to try and level the match before half time but struggled to find the final piece. There was plenty of service for Benzema but the number nine was unable to put the ball home.

Rarely do we know what is said inside the dressing room, but the words of Zinedine Zidane at half time are worth a fortune. In resuming the match, Zidane elected to swap out his entire starting XI, a move that shocked many.

It was a bold move and Bayern’s dominance showed exactly why. Many of the players fielded in the second-half have never played a match together. The back four struggled immensely as Munich scored two goals within two minutes.

Robert Lewandowksi doubled the Germans tally just minutes before Serge Gnabry made it three.

New summer signing Rodrygo made his debut for Real Madrid and scored the lone goal for Los Blancos. The Brazilian rounded the Munich keeper but was brought down before he could be slot the ball into the net earning himself a free-kick. With plenty of Brazilian flare, the youngster fired it into the top right corner for a wonderful golaso to make it 1-3.

Real Madrid’s next game will be on July 24 against Premier League side Arsenal at the FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland.
