Real Madrid didnāt sign Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, or Donny van de Beek this summer, meaning theyāll have their eyes on young midfield reinforcements next year.
Although the 2019 summer transfer window closed and Real Madrid were the biggest spenders in the world, itās never too early for rumors to begin swirling for next year. And Realās rumors focus on midfield reinforcements, as the club will have to get younger ā and better ā at this thin position over the long term.
According to a report from Carlos Forjanes of AS, Real has interest in pursuing Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek next summer. Specifically, van de Beek would be an alternative to signing Pogba, who remains Zinedine Zidaneās No. 1 target after the manager made it clear he wished to sign the Manchester United superstar this summer.
United held onto Pogba and will continue to do their best to keep him in Manchester, even as it seems more and more likely that heāll angle for a deal to the Bernabeu. Real have also shown interest in Bruno Fernandes this summer, with both van de Beek and Fernandes reportedly being close to deals.
Real Madrid management, per the report fromĀ AS, wanted van de Beek to have one more year of seasoning at Ajax before potentially joining. At 22, van de Beek is still raw, even as he showed great leadership and control at the heart of Ajaxās impressive midfield in the 2018-2019 campaign.
Fans of Los Blancos will keep a close eye on van de Beek this season. Even without Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong, Ajax are still an exciting team to watch, and van de Beek will be asked to do even more without de Jong.
Realās midfield is already thin this season, and theyāll have to replace both Toni Kroos and Luka Modric in the coming years. That means even with Dani Ceballos returning from loan to lock up a starting spot, Real would be wise to sign at least one standout in midfield. Pogba is ideal due to his star power, but a young player like van de Beek would also be a smart signing.
Van de Beek already has two goals and three assists through three league games this season, and he had 12 goals and 12 assists in the Eredivisie and Champions League last season. Itās safe to say that heās already a star performer.
