CD Tacon has started their journey in the top flight, but after a disappointing opening game, many are left unsure of what to expect.

CD Tacon’s inaugural game in La Liga Feminina ended in a 9-1 loss, at the hands of Barcelona. It’s never a good look to get beat by such a margin, but it was a shark versus a minnow scenario.

Any person with an ounce of common sense was expecting an uneven contest. Tacon has just been promoted to the top flight, while Barcelona were last season Champions League runner-ups.

Tacon, a relatively young team, was started in 2014 and earned their promotion to the first division in fewer than five seasons. Conversely, Barcelona Feminina has been dominating since the inception of the women’s league in the 1980s.

The saying nothing good comes easy couldn’t epitomise Tacon any better. The newly appointed team has plenty to work on.

This past summer though Tacon’s front office has been working hard to ensure they avoid relegation. Head Coach David Aznar has arguably the toughest job in the league. He is the driving force of a team that has plenty of expectation and just as much pressure from the club itself.

Over the summer Aznar has brought eight players to the squad, letting go of others in the process. The goal is, of course, to improve the squad in every third of the pitch. All of Tacon’s new additions come from countries that participated in the 2019 World Cup, a clear indication that only the best will do.

Striker Kosovare Asllani who plays her national football with Sweden was the team’s marquee signing of the summer. The Swede is a longtime fan of Real Madrid and expressed that if Los Blancos were to create a Las Blancas, she would be on board. Her raw talent and skill are undeniable, but even players at the top of their game need time to adjust.

In any sport bringing new players to a squad poses several challenges, the most important being chemistry. No athlete can make their way into a new squad and have a meaningful and consistent impact without time.

It isn’t all negatives though, Tacon’s lone goal was executed wonderfully, right from the training ground. Asllani’s through ball to Swedish teammate Sofia Jakobsson took her into space before crossing the ball to the oncoming Jessica Martinez, who headed it past the keeper.

Trust the process and let time do its thing. Winning is great, but stay locked into this team because it will only go up from here. The destination is always wonderful, but the journey there is what you will remember. The struggles and the anguish before the glitz and the glamour.
