Real Madrid have a ton of promising prospects ready to make an impact in the coming years, but they also have their eyes on a talented 16-year-old at Rennes who had a Man of the Match-quality display against PSG earlier this season.
Eduardo Camavinga is a 16-year-old prospect, and he’s making quite the impression in Ligue 1 at Rennes. This is Camavinga’s first season in France’s top flight after producing jaw-dropping highlights and goal totals for Rennes II last season. Based on what he’s already accomplished heading into his second season of his senior career, it’s safe to say that Camavinga is one of the hottest prospects in world football.
According to a report from MARCA’s Jose Felix Diaz, Real Madrid have interest in Camavinga, as he is “first on the list” of top prospects that Los Blancos are looking at.
Real Madrid signed Takefusa Kubo this summer, have Martin Odegaard shining at Real Socieded, and are also watching left back Sergio Reguilon make strides on loan at Sevilla. Rodrygo Goes, Eder Militao, and Luka Jovic are other up-and-coming stars on the roster.
But there’s always room for more prospects, and Camavinga is a 16-year-old sensation. He caught everyone’s eyes in mid-August when he put in a Man of the Match performance against PSG, helping lead Rennes to a 2-1 upset win.
In that game, Camavinga led all Rennes midfielders with 60 touches, drawing six fouls and recording three tackles in a critical all-action display. Camavinga was sharp on the ball with a 97.6% passing accuracy and an additional key pass. Basically, he looked far more composed, threatening, and capable defensively against PSG’s midfield than any of Real Madrid’s players in Wednesday’s games.
The maturity that the 16-year-old midfielder shows is incredible, and it is no surprise that he is already on Madrid’s radar. What Camavinga did against PSG was truly special, and he’s held his own in all of Rennes’ other games despite his youth.
Next summer, Los Blancos are expected to load up on center midfielders. They’ve already been linked to Christian Eriksen, Fabian Ruiz, Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante, Bruno Fernandes and Donny van de Beek. All of them are talented players, but since Real have just one defensive midfielder and no young prospects at the position, they need to prioritize well-rounded midfielders and youth.
Signing two current stars and a prospect like Camavinga isn’t out of the question as Los Blancos could completely revamp their midfield. While Real need players who can help the team now, they also need a CM of the future; Camavinga already looks like an insane talent.
It would be good for the team to hedge their bets with more established players on the market to win now, but Camavinga is indeed a player who should be kept in mind as a potential part of the equation. Real Madrid should monitor his development and performances in Ligue 1 this season as closely as possible.
