Real Madrid left back Ferland Mendy has been exceptional this season, and the summer signing will make his return to the lineup in short order.
Ferland Mendy has missed a couple of games for Real Madrid after suffering a muscular injury during the team’s 1-0 win over Sevilla, in which he played a key role holding his own against tricky customer Lucas Ocampos.
This injury has stretched Real thin at left back, as Marcelo suffered a setback and Nacho Fernandez will be out for more than two months with a knee injury he picked up in the Champions League draw with Club Brugge. But Dani Carvajal played his mind out at left back in a 4-2 win over Granada, and, now, Mendy is back on the mend.
The French left back recently told Canal Football Club that if all goes well, he’ll be able to train with the rest of his teammates this week during the international break.
Even on a team with Marcelo, Mendy is the preferred starting option at left back for Real Madrid. That’s how good he’s been this season, as he impressed against Villarreal last month and hasn’t looked back since. Even in games where Real has struggled, such as the 3-0 loss to PSG, Mendy would quietly be a bright spot in the team.
It’s great to hear that Mendy will be healthy and ready to play soon. He has the potential to be one of the best left backs in world football, and he’s already shown that potential in his first season with Los Blancos. The defensive solidity, positional awareness, and athleticism he brings to the table make him the most important fullback on the roster, and his importance should be magnified on Oct. 26 when Real Madrid face Barcelona’s vaunted attack in El Clasico.
Mendy undoubtedly has his eyes on that match between first and second on Oct. 26, and there’s a feeling he could be the difference-maker in that one.
