Could Real Madrid buy Christian Eriksen for just 20 million euros?

The Christian Eriksen transfer rumors are beginning to heat up this Fall, as Real Madrid reportedly have their eyes on the Tottenham playmaker for the winter transfer window.

Although Real Madrid are loaded with playmaking midfielders in Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, James Rodriguez, and Isco, that hasn’t stopped them from reportedly showing significant interest in Christian Eriksen.

Los Blancos were linked to Eriksen in the summer transfer window, as Tottenham understood that the Denmark international would want to leave the club. Eriksen insinuated that Real Madrid is the challenge he is looking for, but a deal never materialized.

MARCA’s Jose Felix Diaz reports that Spurs tried to re-sign Eriksen on three separate occasions this season after previously attempting to sell him to Real. But Real understandably had eyes on Paul Pogba, who is a better fit – and a better player.

Now that Eriksen has made it absolutely clear that he wants to leave London, Spurs have no choice but to sell the star man this winter or risk losing him on a free transfer in the summer. And Eriksen is simply too good of a player for Tottenham to get nothing in return.

Per MARCA, Tottenham are looking for 20 to 25 million euros in return for Eriksen, which highlights how badly they want to get at least something in return for him. Eriksen isn’t playing to his level due to the rumors, and, again, it’s always seemed like his heart has been elsewhere.

Real Madrid have talent in the midfield, but they’ve also dealt with their fair share of injuries already this season. Eriksen is a world-class player who consistently totals double-digit assists in a season and is a legitimate goal-scoring threat, particularly from set pieces.

There’s nothing wrong with adding more talent to a club, and while Eriksen is 27 and potentially redundant due to the presence of James and Isco, a potential 20 million-euro deal would be an absolute steal for Los Blancos.

That price may be too low to resist. Purchasing Eriksen would likely take Real out of the running for younger midfielders like Kai Havertz and Donny van de Beek, but since those players will cost around 100 million euros, maybe it’s better to sign the playmaker in his prime before spending that nine-figure sum on a different transfer target in 2020.

Of course, if Real Madrid wait, they could sign Eriksen for free. But if they truly do value Eriksen’s class that highly, is 20 million euros worth the price to give an injury-prone midfield an immediate lift? That may be one of the key questions for Florentino Perez to answer internally.
