Real Madrid are currently first in La Liga at the October international break, but which players have been the most instrumental to the team’s success?

Coming into the season, Real Madrid fans knew that Karim Benzema’s goals would be vital to the club’s chances of competing for titles. Benzema was undoubtedly the team’s best player last season, especially when so many attackers on Real failed to step up to the plate in Cristiano Ronaldo’s first season at Juventus.

This season, Benzema has picked up where he left off, and he’s actually on pace for more than the 21 league goals he scored in 2018-2019. Through eight matchdays, Benzema has already struck six times, including crucial performances to help Real win matches against Levante and Sevilla.

But Benzema’s goals haven’t been the only thing pushing Real Madrid to first in the table. Sergio Ramos’s continued brilliance defensively and more great covering from holding midfielder Casemiro have been equally instrumental in Real’s table-topping performance.

Before getting into which five players have been Real’s best this season, it’s important to give out some honorable mentions. Gareth Bale and Dani Carvajal have played pretty well so far this season, and Fede Valverde has looked like a legitimate breakout star, especially after his Man of the Match display vs. Granada.

And James Rodriguez? It is wonderful to have the Colombian attacking midfielder back in the mix.
