CB Sergio Ramos

It’s been business as usual for Sergio Ramos, who recently became the most-capped player in Spain’s history, beating another Real Madrid legend in Iker Casillas for this prestigious honor. The captain’s hunger remains unmatchable, even at the age of 33.

More importantly, Ramos’s reading of the game and tenacity in defense have been as good as ever, and he’s already enjoying a more successful campaign in 2019-2020. Ramos has been less active on the stat sheet, as he does not lead Los Blancos in tackles, interceptions, or clearances per game.

However, you only have to look at Real’s poor performance against PSG to see how much the club misses him when he’s not in the starting lineup. At times, Ramos can be too aggressive with his positioning and made a few awful errors against Club Brugge, but he also atoned for his mistakes by scoring in that game to finish as one of Real’s top performers vs. Brugge.

Ramos remains one of the best center backs in the world, and it is impossible to truly measure the impact he has on his teammates when on the pitch. He’s been active at covering gaps defensively, marauding forward when necessary, and instilling confidence in Varane, who has been the busier of the two when it comes to directly cutting out danger.
