CDM Casemiro

It is almost impossible to say who has been THE best player on Real Madrid through the first couple of months of the 2019-2020 season, but Brazilian midfielder Casemiro undoubtedly has to be on the shortlist.

The lone true defensive midfielder on the roster, Casemiro always held an important role for Real, and he’s somehow been even better than expected. Casemiro’s ability to cover ground and his genius in reading the game have enabled him to lead all of La Liga in combined interceptions and tackles so far in 2019-2020.

Overlooking the importance of Casemiro’s defense to Real’s success would be unwise, and the man has also managed to make an impact in attack. He’s sent in a few teasing balls this season, including the long ball that Rodrygo secured so brilliantly for his debut goal. And Casemiro also scored a critical headed goal in Real’s 2-2 comeback tie with Club Brugge.

Casemiro’s all-around play is vital to Real Madrid’s success, and the burgeoning partnership between him and the younger Fede Valverde will be one of Los Blancos’ biggest storylines heading into El Clasico on Oct. 26. If Valverde can emerge as a standout midfielder alongside the equally industrious Casemiro, then Real could have the world’s best midfield trio.
