Real Madrid: Top 5 performances from 4-0 win over Eibar
CB Sergio Ramos
Sergio Ramos is so brilliant and so consistent that it’s easy to take him for granted, but the Real Madrid captain has been one of the best defenders in the world so far in 2019-2020. As the debacle at the Parc des Princes in September showed us, Real are a very different team without Ramos in the lineup, as his leadership and innate reading of the game make him an invaluable part of Real’s elite defense.
Los Merengues boast arguably the best defense in the world when at full strength, and Ramos is a huge part of it. Taking care of Eibar’s underwhelming attackers was light work for Ramos, who partnered with Ferland Mendy to frustrate the opposition’s top threat, Fabian Orellana, with relative ease.
Ramos recorded two tackles, an interception, four aerial duels won, and a team-high nine clearances in another assured display. Real Madrid have the right set up with these two world-class center backs under Zinedine Zidane. Raphael Varane does most of the running, covering, and heavy lifting, while Ramos reads the game, makes last-ditch interventions, and carries the ball to the opposition when needed as support for the midfield.
Varane and Ramos are perfect together, just as they were on Saturday against Eibar. And on top of that, Ramos added another wonderfully taken, cheeky penalty to his resume. Ramos is quite the technician as a center back, which shows just how well-developed his game is, and it’s gotten more mature and layered with age.
