1. El Clasico

With eight games left to play in 2019, there isn’t a whole to narrow down, but the number one spot was the easiest part of this article. El Clasico, the most-watched and recognised club rivalry in the world of sport.

The match was originally scheduled for October but due to political unrest in Catalunya, the match was postponed. While it is an important topic, I won’t be getting into the intricacies of Real Madrid and Barcelona playing one another at such a period in time.

Opponent: FC Barcelona

Matchday: Matchday 17

Date: December 18, 2019

Location: Camp Nou

Competition: La Liga

Back to the football though.

With the two teams unable to meet, both have a game in hand. Even with that ace up their sleeve Barcelona and Real Madrid sit in the first and second spot in the standings with only goal difference separating the two.

Madrid has been flat in La Liga over the past few decades, something I’ve been droning about over the past few weeks as that streak looks to come to an end. Madrid’s start to the season has been great, showing adversity and growth.

Whoever wins this game could have a massive advantage, at least until the next time these two teams meet again on the first of March.

Lionel Messi has been carrying Barcelona through the trenches and Karim Benzema has been Los Blancos’ ace as he leads the league in scoring. Benzema’s impressive start has earned him nine matches and three assists in 944 minutes of play. Karim is currently on pace to beat his 2018-2019, 30 goal haul.
