Real Madrid center back Sergio Ramos is one of the best defenders in the world, but he made an inexcusable error in the second minute of the team’s game against Real Sociedad.
Coming into Matchday 14, Real Madrid were second place in the La Liga table, while Real Sociedad were fourth. Behind Martin Odegaard’s incredible play this season, Sociedad have looked like legitimate sleepers for the title and have the quality to sew up a Champions League spot.
It took only two minutes for Sociedad to strike first against Madrid on Saturday. But instead of an inch-perfect pass from Odegaard setting up a goal for Willian Jose, it was an inch-perfect backpass from Sergio Ramos.
Check out a video of Ramos’ awful mistake.

Ramos has made early mistakes before this season, as he can get caught out or make ill-disciplined errors. In this case, though, the Captain made an uncharacteristic error with this backpass. I have no idea why he blindly make this pass from the sidelines to the center of the penalty box, but he gifted Sociedad a goal.
Although Ramos will have to forget this error, he likely knew that he needed to atone for it later in the match. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois simply had no chance to save this, as Ramos completely hung his keeper out to dry.
This goal from Sociedad, which was an absolute gift, broke Courtois’ streak of over 500 scoreless minutes, which broke Keylor Navas’ streak at Real. Courtois had recorded five straight clean sheets to emphatically bounce back from early-season criticism, but he could not be blamed for this streak-breaking goal from Willian Jose.
Real Madrid have rebounded from early goals, but Sociedad are not the kind of team you want to go down on early. They have attacking firepower in spades, led by Los Blancos’ future superstar loanee Odegaard.
