Real Madrid are among the big clubs interested in RB Salzburg sensation Erling Braut Haaland, and all of these teams were given a boost by a recent clarification from Salzburg’s sporting director.

Erling Braut Haaland has set the Champions League alight this campaign, as the 19-year-old Norwegian has scored 8 goals in only 299 minutes in Europe’s top club competition. These displays have piqued the interest of the continent’s biggest teams, including Real Madrid.

There were worried, however, that RB Salzburg had a special agreement with partner club RB Leipzig so that Haaland would have a meager release clause of around 30 million euros exclusively for the Bundesliga club.

Those fears can be put to rest. Salzburg’s sporting director Cristoph Freund told Kicker that there is no such agreement between his club and Leipzig.

Real Madrid and other top clubs can now safely engage in a bidding war for Haaland’s services, and there will be a great deal of suitors.

Because Los Blancos already have a superstar striker in Karim Benzema, who is coming off back-to-back Champions League braces and has 10 goals in 12 La Liga games, and spent 50 million euros on young Bundesliga standout Luka Jovic in the summer, they won’t pursue Haaland as forcefully as others. Meanwhile, a club like Manchester United could have a great deal of interest in a teenager who already has an accomplished Champions League goal-scoring record.

United and Real aren’t the only teams interested in Haaland, but the stature of their clubs and fan bases means that they are two of the most buzzworthy. Haaland will have his pick next summer, assuming he decides to leave Salzburg for the 2020-2021 season.

Of course, Haaland could even move sooner than that, as he is able to play for another team in this year’s Champions League if a transfer were to occur in the winter. A bidding war for the Norway international’s services could commence in January, and it will be interesting to see how much Florentino Perez is interested in acquiring him. Perez has made it clear he wants to bring top young talent to the Santiago Bernabeu, but with Haaland, the secret has long been out.
