Real Madrid: Top Five Transfers of the Decade
4. Luka Modric
(Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid – August 2012)
At 34 years of age, Luka Modric is in decline as he spends he nears his retirement. Having said that, his contribution to the game and to Real Madrid specifically should not – and will not – be forgotten. In a decade dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo at practically all award ceremonies, Luka Modric was able to break that for one year as he was named Ballon d’Or winner and UEFA Player of the Year in 2018.
The Croatian midfielder has formed part of a deadly trio with Kroos and Casemiro at Real Madrid as he continuously dazzled everyone with his skills on the pitch. Modric may not have the build to take on some of the best players in Europe but that was never something that stopped him as he always knew how to use his body to his advantage.
Since his arrival at the club in 2012 for a fee of 35 million euros in 2012, Luka Modric has been able to add numerous trophies to his cabinet. In addition to the individual awards, Modric has been able to form the starting lineup that won La Liga and the Spanish Copa del Rey once while winning the Spanish Super Cup twice since his arrival. The Croatian has also been able to win the UEFA Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup four times while being crowned the champion of the UEFA Super Cup thrice.
Luka Modric’s effect on the pitch has been something that we need to consider ourselves extremely lucky to witness. The player, who was initially voted as the worst transfer of the summer along with Alex Song, went on to do the unimaginable in a Real Madrid jersey and was able to win the Ballon D’Or in 2018 to prove just how much his impact was with Real Madrid, the Croatian National Team and European football in general.
