Real Madrid have two women ranked in the top 100 for 2019
Real Madrid’s women’s team, CD Tacon, has shown signs of improvement over the past month, as they have climbed to 11th in Liga Iberdrola. Since they have multiple world-class players in their Starting XI, a further rise should be expected in the second half of the season.
In 2020-2021, Real Madrid will officially have a women’s team playing with the club’s name. But this season, they are still CD Tacon, who were purchased by Real before the start of the season.
In order to ensure that the club stayed in Spain’s top flight this year, Real signed several Galacticas. Kosovare Asllani and Sofia Jakobsson were stars for Sweden in the 2019 Women’s World cup and were signed, and Real/Tacon also added the wonderful Chioma Ubogagu from the Orlando Pride. Before leaving for Spain, she had been Orland’s best player in 2019.
While Ubogagu was unsurprisingly snubbed from their list – most people haven’t figured out that she’s a world-class attacker in her own right – Real Madrid had two women place well in The Guardian’s top 100 list for 2019.
Asllani led the way in 35th, and Jakobsson was ranked 51st among all players in women’s football. There’s no doubt that Asllani is one of the best in the world as a hard-working forward or midfielder with plenty of technical quality in the attack. And you can’t deny her leadership.
Meanwhile, Jakobsson is a pacy wide forward with a deadly eye for goal, and CD Tacon fans have already been enjoying her brilliant runs in 2019-2020. Jakobsson is one of those players who just leaves defenders for dead.
Hopefully, Tacon can continue to add elite talent to their club and challenge clubs like traditional rivals FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. Despite not being the finished product, they kept it close with Atleti in their most recent match, only losing 2-1 behind an early goal from Ubogagu.
And as for Ubogagu, she’ll join her teammates on these lists soon enough. On an Orlando team loaded with attacking firepower – namely Marta and Alex Morgan, who are two of the greatest players ever – Ubogagu still managed to stand out as a star. The England international will gain the recognition she deserves in due time, which will hopefully lead to more international opportunities in the future.
Real Madrid were linked to Sam Kerr (a sure-first first on The Guardian’s list) and Megan Rapinoe (the Ballon d’Or winner) this year, and there will undoubtedly be more rumors and signings to come. Barcelona had eight players in the top 100 (three of them ranked in the top 25), and Real will want to have that kind of firepower in their squad after a couple of more years of building.
