LW Isco

There’s no way to sugarcoat this: Isco did not play well today. He struggled to start counterattacks and was bullied badly by Getafe’s defense, who gave him no space Isco’s tricks and dribbling skills should have made him a key factor against a physical defense, but he looked lethargic and out of sorts in the first game after the break.

But Isco has played well in bigger games, such as against PSG and Barcelona. So fans shouldn’t overreact to a poor performance from the Spain international. Still, you’d like to see a player of his quality involve himself more into games, no matter the game flow.

Rating: 5.0 out of 10

RW Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale squandered three great opportunities, including one created by Fede Valverde late in the game that should have been a sure-fire goal. He often took the wrong option and did little to influence the game, getting pinned back frequently by Getafe. Like Isco, he was taken out of the game by the physical defense.

But Bale did have some bright moments at the end of the game. He tested David Soria a few times and made a critical pass for the 3-0 goal, hitting up Fede Valverde perfectly on the pivot. Bale should be criticized for 80 minutes of below-average play, but he should also be praised for stepping up at the end.

Rating: 5.0 out of 10

ST Karim Benzema

Real Madrid fans were worried about back-to-back goalless draws to close 2019 and felt that Karim Benzema would have to bail them out again in this game, since he’s been by far their leading goal-scorer.

So it’s a positive that Real were able to win 3-0 despite it being arguably Benzema’s worst performance of the season. Benzema worked hard for his teammates and did whatever he could to carve out chances, but he didn’t get much service and sometimes struggled to do too much with the ball. This was partially due to the poor performances from Isco and Bale.
