Real Madrid attacking midfielder Luka Modric continued his strong 2019-2020 campaign with a delicious outside-the-boot goal in Los Blancos’ rampant Supercup semifinal triumph over Valencia.
Last month, Real Madrid needed a last-gasp goal from Karim Benzema, created by goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois’ header, to rescue a point at the Mestalla against Valencia. But on Wednesday in Saudi Arabia, Los Blancos absolutely thrashed one of La Liga’s top teams in a 3-0 victory, which included a trio of great goals.
The first goal was an “Olympic” goal from Toni Kroos on a corner. Isco nabbed the second after cooly finishing Luka Modric’s rebound. And then Modric scored the third, matching Kroos with a moment of magic of his own.
Real Madrid’s midfield bossed Valencia all game long, and this 3-0 goal from Modric was the icing on the cake.

Real Madrid are so devastating on the counterattack, and this goal was actually Modric’s second straight counterattacking goal. He nabbed the late 3-0 goal in Saturday’s win over Getafe after slotting home an easy finish from Fede Valverde’s pass on the counter.
But this finish was far more difficult and showcased Modric’s technical quality. Outside-the-boot goals are always sweet to watch, and this Trivela from Modric was right out of the top drawer. Look at how little space he had and how slim the margin for error was!
This goal isn’t Modric’s first special strike of the campaign. His first goal of 2019-2020 came against Granada when he hit an absolute screamer into the goal’s poststage stamp. Modric also scored a great volleyed goal this season.
The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner has absolutely been on world-class form in 2019-2020, and he has joined Toni Kroos, Casemiro, and Fede Valverde as top options in Zinedine Zidane’s midfield, which clearly looks like the best in the world.
Wednesday night’s performance in Saudi Arabia against Valencia has sealed both Modric’s and the Real Madrid midfield’s standing as something beyond even elite. This is a special group of players, and Modric’s goal is an example of the quality they bring to the table. They make football beautiful.
