Real Madrid reportedly have interest in Lazio star midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who also seems to have a desire to head to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Although Real Madrid have found a true breakout star in Fede Valverde, whose presence has helped elevate Los Blancos to Champions League title favorites, that hasn’t stopped the club from being linked to some of the best center midfielders in the world.

Paul Pogba, Donny van de Beek, and Napoli’s Fabian Ruiz have all been mentioned in the same breath as Real Madrid, who should be aiming for a young star in the center of the park. Eduardo Camavinga and Boubakary Soumare in Ligue 1 have also reportedly piqued Los Blancos’ interest.

And now, FootMercato.net reports that Real Madrid have begun talks for Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who has long been regarded as one of the best up-and-coming stars at the center midfield position.

More from The Real Champs

The 24-year-old is said to be a fan of Madrid (how many players don’t want to play for the world’s biggest club?), and Florentino Perez is reportedly a fan of Milinkovic-Savic’s, too.

Born in Spain but a star for the Serbia national team, Milinkovic-Savic has scored three goals with four assists in Serie A so far this season and has been similarly excellent in the Europa League.

The Lazio man is averaging 2.3 key passes per game and 2.5 tackles per game in the continental competition, further reenforcing the notion that he is one of the best all-around midfielders in the business.

A true center midfielder, Milinkovic-Savic could bolster Real’s depth and be an important part of the future of the club.

Toni Kroos and Luka Modric are still world-class, and Valverde is already that caliber of player. But Modric’s contract will expire soon, so adding more depth would be prudent for Real.

The problem with Milinkovic-Savic is that Lazio know his worth and are inflating his value more than Napoli is with Ruiz, who could cost 70 million euros. Lazio want more for Milinkovic-Savic than what Manchester United paid for Pogba. While Milinkovic-Savic is younger than Pogba and would still be cheaper, a price tag of nine figures would be ridiculous, especially since Real could purchase an arguably better player in van de Beek for nearly half the price.

Still, Milinkovic-Savic has class and the defensive skills that Real need, so pay close attention to how their interest in the Lazio star evolves over the coming months.
