Real Madrid won their first trophy of the season after defeating Atletico Madrid on penalties 4-1, as the two teams failed to score in regular and extra time.

Zinedine Zidane again went for the 4-5-1 formation that he used against Valencia, packing the Real Madrid midfield and using high press to cover up for the high line.

Thibaut Courtois’ saves in extra time and Fede Valverde’s performance on both halves of the pitch helped Real Madrid get a hand to their first trophy of the season. Fede Valverde took a tactical red card in the extra time for a foul on Alvaro Morata, who was going one on one against Courtois which helped Real Madrid to keep the scores level in extra time.

Atletico had the better chances but Courtois was up to the task and helped Madrid win the trophy.

Here are the player ratings from the final.

GK Thibaut Courtois

This has to be one of the best performances the Belgian has put for Los Blancos, he saved Madrid time and again throughout the game especially in the extra time. He capped the night off by saving Thomas Partey’s penalty during the shootout which almost put a nail in the coffin on any hope Atletico had on winning the trophy.

Thibaut Courtois has turned his Real Madrid career around and is finally playing like the best goalkeeper in the world. Since the PsG game at Parc de Prince he has been phenomenal and so has been the defence. This was a man of the match worthy performance from the Belgian and should have probably won the award hadn’t it been for one brilliant Uruguayan.
