Real Madrid will reportedly be without their captain, Serigo Ramos, for two weeks due to an ankle injury he sustained in Los Blancos’ Spanish Supercup final triumph over rivals Atletico Madrid.

Sunday’s Spanish Supercup final in Saudi Arabia was a predictably gritty affair between rivals Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, with the latter playing even uglier and more defensive than usual in an effort to outlast their higher-quality opposition.

It nearly paid off, too. Atletico create some good chances and took Real to their limit, as neither team could score in 120 minutes. Los Blancos won in penalties and brought home another trophy for Zinedine Zidane’s increasingly crowded cabinet, but the win came at a cost.

According to a report from AS, Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos suffered an ankle injury in the 61st minute of the match. Ramos, who scored yet another penalty, managed to play through the pain, but he twisted his ankle and could miss 15 days due to the injury.

Ramos joins Eden Hazard and Karim Benzema on the list of key injuries, and Gareth Bale missed the Spanish Supercup with an upper respiratory infection. Fede Valverde’s upcoming suspension also leaves Los Blancos short on key players for the Saturday fixture against Sevilla.

If Ramos is out for two weeks, he will most probably miss the Sevilla and Real Valladolid games. But he should be back for the Feb. 1 rematch against Atletico Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, which is also the expected return date for superstar left winger Eden Hazard.

Ramos’ leadership, goal-scoring ability, top-quality passing from the back, and elite defensive work will all be missed, especially against a side of Sevilla’s quality. But thankfully, Real have a fantastic backup in Eder Militao, who will almost certainly be up to the task of locking down Sevilla’s attack on Saturday.

Hopefully, Ramos can recover fully and quickly from this seemingly minor ankle injury, though Los Merengues fans will be nervous after Hazard’s supposedly minor ankle issue proved to be more costly.
