Defenders

Dani Carvajal: 6.5/10

With Álvaro Odriozola loaned out to Bayern Munich for the rest of the season, it was clear that Dani would be playing more minutes than usual. He only missed a game the entire month (through suspension) and wasn’t substituted once.

While he’s the undisputed starter at right-back, he didn’t put in any noteworthy performances this month. His defensive contribution is as always good but he still is quite inconsistent. He needs to step up his game.

Raphaël Varane: 8.5/10

What an underrated season Varane is having!

The French defender is back to his top form and has been extremely solid in defense for Real Madrid. Having conceded just two goals this month when he’s been on the pitch, Varane is on fire to put it simply.

As if his defensive contributions weren’t enough, he has also popped up with two goals for the whites this month. It’s great to have Varane back to his very best!

More from The Real Champs

Sergio Ramos: 8/10

33-years-old Sergio Ramos still puts in great defensive performances week after week. He’s often been criticized for losing focus during games but was pretty consistent for Madrid this January.

It was a great month from the captain.

Ferland Mendy: 8.5/10

Would it be too soon to call Mendy as the best left-back in the world?

If not the best, he has certainly been one of the best this month while playing for Los Blancos. It’s extremely difficult to ever replace a player like Marcelo, but Mendy is a completely different type of player. Defensively stout, Mendy has slowly improved his offensive game.

A little more refinement to his final output in the attacking third and Real Madrid will have a dominant left flank.

Nacho: 7.5/10

The Madrid academy graduate played two games this January and scored the winner in La Liga vs Real Valladolid when playing as a right-back.

As always, while not spectacular, he got the job done for Madrid and is critical for the team’s rotations.

Marcelo: 6/10

Real Madrid’s legendary left-back returned from injury this month, but looked completely out of touch as expected from a player just returning from injury.

He is nowhere near his best and looks completely devoid of confidence with Mendy in such impressive form. Could this be the beginning of the end for Marcelo?

Eder Militao:7.5/10

Sergio Ramos and Varane have been in impressive form this season. But, every time one of them has missed a game due to suspension, rotation, or injury, Real Madrid hasn’t missed them and it’s thanks to this man, Eder Militao.

Militao played three games this month and was rock solid in all three of them. He looks confident and assured especially for a 22-year-old playing his first season in Spain. With each passing game, he keeps on improving.
