Three takeaways as Real Madrid slip to a draw against Celta Vigo

Take it easy on Karim Benzema:
Not so long ago, Karim Benzema could literally do no wrong. He was scoring consistently and generally seemed to be at the top of his game. However, he has slowed a little in recent weeks – although that is to be expected. He picked up a minor injury prior to the Super Cup, something he may still be feeling and he’s played more minutes than anyone this season.
Against Celta, he did miss a couple of good chances but he also worked himself into the ground for the team. Whilst fans are frustrated that he did that, it seems people gloss over his tireless work ethic and his all important link-up. In fact, he was key in the build-up to the equaliser, he wasn’t at his best but certainly performed adequately.
The Frenchman often found himself marked incredibly tightly and when he did find space, often found himself running into a barricade of Celta players – he, like everyone else, struggled against a very compact and stubborn Celta backline. He may not be playing at his optimum level, but he certainly doesn’t warrant the call to be dropped.
