Given the manner of the defeat, many fans will forget that the overall performance was not all bad. There were good sequences of play and some solid individual performances that warrant praise. Vinicius Jr shone on the big stage, whilst he may have missed a sitter, his general offensive play was brilliant and definitely warrants more faith.

Alongside the Brazilian, Fede Valverde put in yet another workman like display – providing the vital energy in midfield that we’ve grown accustomed to seeing from him. Ferland Mendy and Thibaut Courtois also were noteworthy performers, particularly the latter, who made several big saves.

In general, Real fans should compare this to the same point last season. Yes, Real are out of the Copa and face an uphill task in the Champions League, however, look at how much more positive the side is. Madridista’s should recall just how bad the transition period could have been – there was literally no hope at this point last season.

While the transition is still yet to be fully completed, it could have and perhaps should have been considerably worse. With all things considered, it was thought to be crazy that they would compete for everything this season. It should be seen as a testament to Zidane that Los Blancos are still alive in two competitions and have already lifted a trophy too. Trust in the process, there is still plenty to come.
