It’s been a really tough 2019/2020 for Real Madrid fullback Marcelo both on and off the field. The Brazilian international has seen his starting spot taken by Ferland Mendy, he has dealt with three separate injuries, and now, he has been fined by the Spanish government.

Poor, poor, poor Marcelo. The Real Madrid legend is having a really tough year in every facet of his life. In football terms only, the left-back has become a rotation player featuring in 19 matches across all competition this season.

The addition of Mendy to the squad has led manager Zinedine Zidane to use the number 12 far less than usual. While Ferland has been impressive in his first season in Spain, it has been Marcelo’s poor form and frequent mistakes that have seen his role reduced.

Add three separate stints on the medical table due to muscle injuries and leg problems and it is very safe to say that Marcelo is now the back-up in the Spanish capital.

He started in the crucial Clasico match a couple of weekends ago and looked more like himself, but in the loss to Real Betis on Sunday, the frequent mistakes were there again and the Brazilian appeared to pick up a knock which forced him off the pitch before the hour mark.

The same day that La Liga and Champions League play was suspended due to concern over the coronavirus, Marcelo was ordered by the Spanish government to pay a hefty fine of €105,000 after being caught driving without a valid license.

The Real Madrid defender agreed to pay €350 a day for the next 10 months after being caught speeding on a service near the Valadebebas training ground late last week. The Brazilian was going 134 km/h according to reports.

Marcelo, if you recall, was charged with tax fraud back in September 2018 and has had a few other problems while driving. Back in the summer of 2019, he lost his license for refusing a breathalyzer test from police while back in Río de Janeiro with his family. He was fined and banned from using his Brazilian driver’s license for 12 months.

You would think that at this point he would just hire someone to drive for him, but I guess he hasn’t thought of that? Whatever the case, Marcelo could benefit from this little break in training and matches to get his life back together.
