If the season is actually over, who is Real Madrid’s player of the year?

While we wait to see if Real Madrid will play another match during the 2019/2020 campaign either domestically or continentally, who should be considered the player of the year?

Let me begin this article by making clear that this is all hypothetical. I am aware that UEFA is making plans to reschedule matches and conclude this season by June 30, but say Real Madrid was done until the fall.

Who has been the best player? Who has been the most influential? Who has been the most clutch?

That is what we will be discussing here.

So, without further delay, here are the top three candidates in my eyes.

Karim Benzema

19 goals in 35 appearances is a good mark for the French beast, Karim Benzema. The striker has shouldered the load left by Cristiano Ronaldo over the last season and a half and has been the main source of goals for Los Blancos ever since.

Karim leads the teams in league goals with 14 and is well ahead of captain Sergio Ramos who sits in second with five. Benzema’s six assists in league play and eight in all competition leads the team as well, so, it’s safe to say that without him, Zinedine Zidane‘s team would be up the creek.

Although the 32-year-old has struggled in recent weeks – he has scored just three times in 2020 – it’s hard to deny how influential a player he still is and has been.

Trending. Real Madrid could give Gareth Bale away for free. light

Benz has relegated Luka Jovic to a bench-warmer this season and almost no one believes the Serbian should start over him.

Benz has always thrived playing as a false nine in Madrid, but like a fine wine, the Frenchman is getting better and better with age.
