Real Madrid and FC Barcelona will be linked to a myriad of standout players in the coming months, and a recent report links both La Liga powerhouses to a long-time Bayern Munich star.

While Real Madrid’s biggest needs are in the attack going into the 2020 summer transfer window, Los Blancos will likely add some depth to their defense and midfield. The same can be said for arch rivals FC Barcelona, who will want to replace Ousmane Dembele and Luis Suarez as starters while also making some changes in midfield and defense.

According to a report from Sport Bild, via BuLiNews.com’s Rune Gjerulff, Real Madrid and Barcelona have interest in Bayern Munich defender David Alaba.

A left back by trade, Alaba played center back throughout the 2019-2020 season due to injuries to Niklas Süle and 2019 summer addition Lucas Hernandez in central defense.

More from The Real Champs

Alaba acquitted himself well at center back and did a lot to help Bayern in the build-up play, which is an important duty at center back in Bavaria. Always known for his intelligence and technical quality at left back, those same traits helped make Alaba a solid starter at center back.

The Austrian international is currently in negotiations with Bayern for a contract extension, since his deal runs out after the 2020-2021 Bundesliga season. However, Sport Bild reports that the 27-year-old star is unsure if he wants to remain in Bayern.

Alaba is a club legend for Die Roten and will most likely end up staying with the Bundesliga’s premier club.

However, it is interesting to see that both Barcelona and Real Madrid have been linked to the player, because they don’t seem to be the kind of teams that would be interested in adding a veteran left back.

Barcelona already have Jordi Alba as an experienced, world-class left back and Junior Firpo as his future replacement. Meanwhile, Real have two of La Liga’s best left backs in Ferland Mendy and Sergio Reguilon, with Marcelo still providing usefulness a veteran presence.

It’s more likely Alaba’s agent is using Madrid and Barça, who were interested in Alaba during his best days at Bayern, to negotiate a higher salary for his client’s upcoming extension.

dark. Next. Selling Jovic would be a terrible decision

Still, Alaba remains a high-quality and versatile defender whose set piece skills add another dimension to his game. Nobody should expect Alaba to make a move to La Liga, but it’s yet another juicy rumor heading into the summer transfer period.
