Real Madrid will continue to be linked to big-money moves heading into the summer 2020 transfer window, but here are five transfers they should avoid making.

Kylian Mbappe may be Real Madrid’s top target, but the PSG attacker won’t be the only star player on Los Blancos’ radar in the summer transfer window this year.

Real Madrid have already been linked to a myriad of attackers, some midfielders, a few defenders, and even a goalkeeper.

However, they won’t be interested in all the players they are linked to in rumors – nor should they.

Here are five transfers Real would be wise to avoid making.

ST Lautaro Martinez

Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez is an excellent player and is squarely on FC Barcelona’s radar as a potential transfer. Real Madrid are reportedly also in the mix, but after Los Blancos purchased Luka Jovic for 60 million euros and eased him into his first season with the powerhouse club, it’s more likely they are trying to drive up Martinez’s price for their bitter rivals.

Martinez will cost about 111 million euros, as Inter probably won’t accept much less than his buyout clause. Barcelona could try to negotiate a swap deal where they pair cash with players, which is a similar strategy to what they tried to do last year in order to pry Neymar from PSG.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid have no reason to give up so much capital for Martinez. He’s an athletic striker who could fit in a two-striker system with Karim Benzema or even Jovic in the future, but for 111 million euros? Real are better off saving the money for Kylian Mbappe or Erling Haaland. Both of those players are better goal-scorers and would fit Real better. Oh, and they’re also better – and younger – players.
