Real Madrid: Here are 5 players who could leave in summer 2020
CM Luka Modric
Luka Modric is another Real Madrid legend who could depart the club this summer, with the MLS looking like a logical landing spot for the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner.
Whereas Real need to get rid of Gareth Bale, they don’t need to cut ties with Modric. He showed that he can still be a productive player, as he was one of La Liga’s best midfielders in 2019-2020. At the beginning of the season, Modric needed to shake off some rust and the ill effects of an injury, but he eventually returned to being an all-action midfielder who provided tireless running, including inspired sprints at the end of games.
Modric still has something left in the tank at 34, but with an expiring contract, it may be best for both sides to have a happy ending this summer. That way, Modric can clear space for Ajax’s Donny van de Beek or even Real Sociedad loan standout Martin Odegaard in midfield. Both players are even better than Modric at this stage and would be part of the future for Los Blancos.
If Modric wants to stay, Real Madrid will surely welcome one more year of his brilliance in midfield with open arms. But if the midfield maestro wants to look for a new challenge in Serie A or finish his career in the MLS, Los Blancos will grant him his wish.
So don’t be surprised if we don’t see Modric manning the Madrid midfield in 2020-2021.
