Real Madrid: Here are 5 players who could leave in summer 2020
ST Mariano Diaz
Striker Mariano Diaz only appeared in one La Liga contest last season, but he appeared in the biggest game of the season. Mariano entered Real Madrid’s second Clasico battle as a late-game substitute in stoppage time, and within a minute of his appearance, the backup forward scored a memorable goal.
Mariano sprinted down the right-hand side of Barcelona’s defense and absolutely destroyed one of La Liga’s top teams, putting the ball past elite goalkeeper Marc Andre ter Stegen, who had been sensational that afternoon, to seal the game at 2-0.
It was a fairytale goal for Mariano, who had been phased out of the lineup for much of the season. His only notable appearances before that were in the Spanish Supercup as a late-game substitute, as he worked hard and dirtied his jersey but never received a snuff at goal.
Mariano was supposed to leave Real Madrid on loan in either the summer or winter transfer window, but he wanted to prove that he had a spot on the team. In the Clasico, Mariano did just that.
However, it’s hard to see him getting regular playing time for Real Madrid in 2020-2021 either. Real will add at least one big-name attacker, the young players are only getting better, Karim Benzema isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and Luka Jovic probably isn’t leaving either.
That means Mariano is the odd man out, as sad as it would be to see him officially leave.
